4/18/08 – Hoboken, NJ

This time, I’m going to start rather than end my post with a SPIRALING FUN FACT: Five of the ten most densely populated cities in the United States are located in New Jersey. Union City is #1, with a population density of almost 53,000 people per square mile. Hoboken comes in at #3, with over 30,000 people per square mile.

Here’s another fun fact for you: as a result of its abnormally high population density, it is impossible to find a parking space in Hoboken. I don’t mean “impossible” as in, “gee, it’s kind of hard”. I mean it as in, “unless something miraculous happens, or somebody dies and wills you their spot, you’re not getting one”. Speaking of miraculous, though, after we loaded in I pulled off a parallel parking job that bordered on the supernatural. Unfortunately, no photographic evidence exists, but if you don’t believe me, ask Rob and Mike from Hero Pattern – they saw it with their own eyes. Such parallel parking prowess is probably attributable to all of the practice I get in Jersey City (#9 on the most densely populated cities list).

We always get a bit of a thrill whenever we play Maxwell’s – not only because it’s a great club, but also because during the 80’s it served as a proving ground for all of the great alternative bands we grew up listening to – R.E.M, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, the list goes on. Another great thing about Maxwell’s is that it has a humane policy of actually feeding the bands that play there (most venues seem to be under the impression that all bands subsist on free PBR’s – which, granted, some do), and the food is quite good. I wonder if Dave Grohl ordered the chicken sandwich or the hummus platter….

Special thanks to Mark Mullane of The Misery Loves and Jim DeSalvo for helping out with the sound. Of course, many thanks to The Milwaukees, who headlined and put on a great show.

Set List: Choices / The Concept… / You Might Say / Victory Kiss / A Face for Radio / The Girl on Top (of the Piano) / The Future / Are You Here / Borrowed Time / Encore – The Connection
